Determined according to the botanical key provided by Matevski in Micevski (2005) as Vitis vinifera L. subsp. vinifera.
Two forms of Vitis vinifera L. occur in the Osogovo region – the wild form – European wild grape or wild grapevine Vitis vinifera subsp. sylvestris (C.C. Gmelin) Hegi = Vitis sylvestris C.C. Gmelin which is native to the region, and the cultivated grape vine Vitis vinifera L. subsp. vinifera which can be found as a garden escape. The distinction between the two forms as separate subspecies is not accepted in The Euro+Med Plantbase (source: Ardenghi et al., 2017+).
Lifeform: Climbing woody perennial; microphanerophyte according to the Raunkiær system.
Distribution: Vitis vinifera L. is native from South Central and Southeast Europe to Central Asia and Iran according to the Plants of the World Online portal (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew). Also native to Spain and North Africa according to The Euro+Med Plantbase (source: Ardenghi et al., 2017+).
Habitat: Found sporadically as a garden escape near orchards and vineyards, in the vicinity of settlements, shrubland and rocky terrains, mainly in the lower part of the mountain on thermophilous sites.
Flowering period: Late spring – early summer: MAY, JUN.
