Determined according to the botanical key provided by Richardson in Tutin et al. 1976) as Tragopogon crocifolius subsp. samaritanii (Heldr. & Sart. ex Boiss.) I. B. K. Richardson, Bot. Jour. Linn. Soc.71: 270 (1976). In The Euro+Med Plantbase (source: Greuter, 2006+) this taxon is accepted at the species level as Tragopogon samaritanii Boiss., Diagn. Pl. Orient., ser. 2, 5: 116. 1856.
Note: The species is similar in appearance to Tragopogon balcanicus Velen. which also occurs in the Osogovo region, the main distinguishing features being the number of involucral bracts (4 to 5 in T. balcanicus and 5 to 8 in T. samaritani) and the surface of the achene body (muricate-squarrose in T. balcanicus with scale-like projections and muricate-tuberculate in T. samaritani).
Lifeform: Biennial.
Distribution: Native to Morocco, Italy and the Balkan Peninsula according to the distribution information provided by The Euro+Med PlantBase (source: Greuter, 2006+) and the Plants of the World Online portal (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew).
Habitat: Clearings and edges of oak forests at c. 850 m altitude (near village of Pantelej).
Flowering period: Late spring – early summer: MAY, JUN.
