Turritis glabra L. (part. syn. Arabis pseudoturritis Boiss. & Heldr.)

Taxonomy: Fam. Brassicaceae// Genus: Turritis // Species: Turritis glabra L. (Part. syn. Arabis pseudoturritis Boiss. & Heldr.)

Determined according to the botanical key provided in The Flora of the Republic of Macedonia (Micevski, 1995) and Flora Europaea (Tutin et al., 1964) as Arabis pseudoturritis Boiss. & Heldr. (syn. Turritis pseudoturritis (Boiss. & Heldr.) Velen.). The taxonomic position of this taxon is somewhat uncertain. While previously it was regarded as a separate species, Arabis pseudoturritis Boiss. & Heldr./ Turritis pseudoturritis (Boiss. & Heldr.) Velen. it is currently considered a partial synonym /synonym of Turritis glabra L. by The Euro+Med PlantBase (source: Marhold, 2011). The population on Osogovo clearly shows the differentiating traits that distinguish Arabis pseudoturritis Boiss. & Heldr. from the typical Turritis glabra L. by having longer, somewhat compressed siliquae up to 80 (max. 90 mm) long x 1,2 mm wide with seeds aligned in one row.

Habitat:  Sparse woods and edges of mixed oak forests.

Lifeform: Biennial to perennial. The first year of the life cycle is characterized by vegetative growth and formation of basal rosette. The generative stage occurs in the second year, when stem with inflorescence is produced.

Flowering period:  Spring (APR, MAY).
