Distribution: Native from West and South Europe to Belarus and Balkan Peninsula according to the distribution information provided by the Plants of the World Online portal (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew). According to The Euro+Med PlantBase (Raab-Straube, 2022+) the native range of this species extends to Turkey, North Caucasus and Syria.

Lifeform: Perennial; Geophyte according to the Raunkiær system.

Habitat: Woods and edges of oak and European beech forests, mountain grasslands and pastures, from c. 850 m altitude up to the subalpine belt.

Flowering period: Spring: MAR, APR.
