Verbascum phlomoides L. (syn. Verbascum adamovicii Velen.)

Taxonomy: Fam. Scrophulariaceae// Genus: Verbascum// Species: Verbascum phlomoides L. (syn. Verbascum adamovicii Velen.)

Determined according to the botanical key provided by Nikolić in Josifović (1974) as Verbascum adamovicii Velen. In Flora Europaea (Ferguson in Tutin et al. 1972) and The Euro+Med PlantBase (Marhold, 2011+) this taxon is not accepted as separate species and is considered a synonym of Verbascum phlomoides L.

In the Osogovo region both the typical form of Verbascum phlomoides L. and Verbascum adamovicii Velen. occur and their populations are ecologically and morphologically distinct. V adamovicii is usually found at higher altitudes – in rocky terrains, grasslands, edges and clearings of European beech forests (c. 1200 up to 1600 m altitude); it differs from the typical form in the overall smaller habit (less than 100 cm high, simple stem and smaller leaves), narrower cauline leaves, longer wooly indumentum of stem and narrower (lanceolate) calyx lobes. The typical form is found at lower altitudes in hill pastures, grasslands, disturbed ground – ruderal areas, alongside roads, cultivated land; compared to V. adamovicii it is taller – well developed specimens reach height of over 150 cm, often with branched stem below the main inflorescence; leaves are larger and somewhat wider; it has short dense indumentum of stem and wider – ovate-lanceolate to ovate calyx lobes.

Lifeform: Biennial plant – first year of the life cycle is vegetative represented by formation of basal rosette; flowering and fruiting occurs in the second year.

Distribution: V. adamovicii is native to the Balkan Peninsula according to the distribution information provided by the the Plants of the World Online portal (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew).

Habitat: Rocky terrains, grasslands, edges and clearings of European beech forests, from c. 1200 up to 1600 m altitude.

Flowering period: Summer: JUN, JUL.
