Crocus flavus Weston

Taxonomy: Fam. Iridaceae// Genus: Crocus// Species: Crocus flavus Weston.

Determined according to the botanical keys provided by Mathew (1980 in Tutin et al.) as Crocus flavus Weston. According to Stjepanović – Veseličić (1976 in Josifović) it keys out as Crocus moesiacus Ker-Gawl. The accepted name in The Euro+Med PlantBase (source: World Checklist of Selected Plant Families 2010) is Crocus flavus Weston.

Note: the examined specimens from Osogovo have a tubular bract 60–85 mm long, but lack a bracteole.

Lifeform: Bulbous perennial plant. Geophyte according to the Raunkiær system.

Distribution: Native from the Balkan Peninsula to Türkiye according to The Euro+Med PlantBase (source: World Checklist of Selected Plant Families, 2010) and the Plants of the World Online portal (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew). 

Habitat:  Oak forests – found in the region of village of Pantelej.

Flowering period: Late winter to early spring (FEB, MAR).
