Anchusa officinalis subsp. intacta (Griseb.) Selvi & Bigazzi

Taxonomy: Fam. Boraginaceae// Genus: Anchusa// Species: Anchusa officinalis L.// Subspecies: Anchusa officinalis subsp. intacta (Griseb.) Selvi & Bigazzi.

Determined according to the botanical key provided by Matevski in Matevski (2010) as Anchusa officinalis L. var. moesiaca (Vel.) Gusul. (syn. Anchusa moesiaca Vel.). In The Euro+Med PlantBase (Valdés & Raab-Straube, 2011+) this taxon is considered a synonym of Anchusa officinalis subsp. intacta (Griseb.) Selvi & Bigazzi.

Species variabiity: two forms occur in the Osogovo region: Anchusa officinalis L. var. officinalis and Anchusa officinalis L. var. moesiaca (Vel.) Gusul. (syn. Anchusa moesiaca Vel.). In The Euro+Med PlantBase, Anchusa officinalis L. var. officinalis is accepted at the subspecies level, while Anchusa moesiaca Velen. is considered a synonym of Anchusa officinalis subsp. intacta (Griseb.) Selvi & Bigazzi.

Distinction between varieties:

  1. Anchusa officinalis L. var. moesiaca (Vel.) Gusul. (syn. Anchusa moesiaca Vel.)- calyx divided from c. 2/3 up to almost to base;
  2. Anchusa officinalis L. var. officinalis – calyx divided c. 1/2 of the length;

Lifeform:  Perennial; hemicryptophyte according to the Raunkiær system.

Distribution: Anchusa officinalis subsp. intacta (Griseb.) Selvi & Bigazzi is native to the Balkan Peninsula according to the distribution information provided by The Euro+Med PlantBase (Valdés & Raab-Straube, 2011+) and The Plants of the World Online portal (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew).

Habitat: Grasslands and hill pastures, rocky terrains, bushlands, clearings of forests, roadsides.

Flowering period:  Late spring – summer: MAY, JUN, JUL.
