Crocus chrysanthus (Herb.) Herb.

Taxonomy: Fam. Iridaceae// Genus: Crocus// Species: Crocus chrysanthus (Herb.) Herb.

Determined according to the botanical key provided by Mathew (1980 in Tutin et al.).

Lifeform: Perennial plant. Geophyte according to the Raunkiær system.

Distribution: Native from the Balkan Peninsula and Romania to Turkey according to The Euro+Med Database (World Checklist of Selected Plant Families, 2010) and the Plants of the World Online portal (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew).

Habitat:  Open habitats from the lowest parts up c. 1500 m altitude – pastures, rocky terrains, sparse shrublands, edges and clearings of oak and European beech forests. In the upper part of the distribution range it can be found growing along with Crocus veluchensis Herb.

Flowering period: Late winter – early spring: FEB, MAR.
