Determined according to the botanical keys provided by Webb in Tutin et al. (1968) and Micevski in Micevski (1998).
Lifeform: Tree; Phanerophyte according to the Raunkiær system.
Distribution: Native from Europe to West Asia and Afghanista; North Africa according to the Plants of the World Online portal (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew).
Habitat: Near rivers, river gorges, ravines, oak and European beech forests, from the lowland up to c. 1350 m altitude. Sweet cherry cultivars which belong to the same species are frequently grown for fruit.
Flowering period: Spring: APR, MAY.
