Lifeform: Perennial, large shrub or small tree; Microphanerophyte according to the Raunkiær system.
Distribution: Native from Europe to Caucasus according to the distribution information provided by the Plants of the World Online portal (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew).
Habitat: Edges of forests, sparse woods, near rivers in the oak and European beech forest belt, from the lowland up to c. 1400 m altitude.
Flowering period: Late winter – mid spring, depending on altitude: FEB, MAR, APR.
