Petrorhagia obcordata (Margot & Reut.) Greuter & Burdet.

Taxonomy: Fam. Caryophyllaceae// Genus: Petrorhagia// Species: Petrorhagia obcordata (Margot & Reut.) Greuter & Burdet.

Literature used for determination: Ball in Tutin et al. (1964), Thomas (1983) and Micevski (1993).

Note: presumably a somewhat confused species with Petrorhagia glumacea (Bory & Chaub.) P. W. Ball & Heywood and Petrorhagia prolifera (L.) P. W. Ball & Heywood. The three species can be distinguished based on the floral and seed characteristics (Thomas, 1983). Examined populations of Petrorhagia obcordata from Osogovo generally have colliculate seeds c 1.5 -1.8 mm long, largest bracts up to 15 mm long x 13 mm wide and obcordate, more or less dentate petal limb with distinct purple venation.

Distribution: Native to the Balkan peninsula according to the distribution information provided by The Euro+Med Plantbase Marhold (2011+) and the Plants of the World Online portal (Royal Botanic Gardens Kew).

Habitat: Grasslands/ pastures and clearings of oak forests at lower altitudes. Found in two locations at c. 600 m altitude – hilly area between the village of Rajchani and the “Svilanovo” region and “Shtalkovichka” River between the villages of Tursko Rudari and Shtalkovica.
