Determined according to the botanical key provided by Stearn in Tutin et al. (1980).
Note: A morphologically variable species, with several variants described based on the presence/absence of bulbils and flowers and flower color. Because of the high variability and simultaneous occurrence of a number of variants, these characteristics do not seem to be of much taxonomic importance. In the Osogovo region, in a single population occur plants with inflorescence only with bulbils, with bulbils and green-white and purple flowers, with bulbils and green-white flowers only and rarely only with flowers.
Lifeform: Perennial; Geophyte according to the Raunkiær system.
Distribution: Native to Europe and the Mediterranean to Iran according to the distribution information provided by the Plants of the World Online portal (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew).
Habitat: Dry grassland/ hill pastures, clearings of forests, sparse woods.
Flowering period: Summer: JUN.
