Determined according to the botanical key provided by Micevski in Micevski (1993) as Lychnis viscaria L. The accepted name in The Euro+Med PlantBase (Marhold, 2011+) is Silene viscaria (L.) Jess.
Note: Somewhat morphologically similar to S. atropurpurea subsp. sartorii which also occurs in the region. Main difference is the length of the carpophore – min. 3 mm or more in S. viscaria and c. 2 mm in S. atropurpurea subsp. sartorii. The calyx in S. viscaria is somewhat more clavate compared to S. atropurpurea subsp. sartorii.
Lifeform: Perennial; Hemicryptophyte according to the Raunkiær system.
Distribution: Native from North and West Europe to Türkiye and North Caucasus according to The Euro+Med PlantBase (Marhold, 2011+). According to the Plants of the World Online portal (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew), both S. viscaria and S. atropurpurea are considered synonyms of Viscaria vulgaris Bernh, with native range from Europe to Southwest Siberia and North Caucasus.
Habitat: Found in clearings and on the edges of forests, shaded rocks and rock cliffs, bushlands, river gorges.
Flowering period: Spring: APR, MAY.
