Lifeform: Perennial; hemicryptophyte according to the Raunkiær system.
Distribution: Native from Subarctic and Tempered to Tropical Mountains – North America: Greenland, Canada and USA to Northeast Mexico; Europe and Asia – to Himalaya, China, Japan and Russian Far East; Central and East Africa; Australian continent: mainland Australia – New South Wales and Victoria, Tasmania; New Zeland according to the distribution information provided by the Plants of the World Online portal (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew).
Habitat: Moist places in the mountain region – grasslands/ pastures, along mountain streams, at c. 1500 m altitude upwards.
Flowering period: Summer: JUL.
